Yesterday I stoped by 10 Detroit area pet shops and asked them to pass out our flyers for the walk-about to intrested customers. 6 stores agreed to help our cause. I know that the owner of Pet Supplies Plus is a huge supporter of the Michigan Humane Society. Maybe someone could contact him to get support for us at the corporate level? And what about contacting the director of the Humane Society for his endorsement? Another group to ask for support from might be the Detroit Art Deco Society. The physical building of the aquarium is significant by itself, and I believe they are a large active group. Anyway, just my thoughts . . . | ||

I just posted a bunch of posters including Critters and Pet Supplies Plus both are on Ecorse road. Also Tim Hortens on Van Born IN Taylor. Sunnyside also on VB in Dh, Clark gas station on Van Born, and 7-11 on Van Born.So far just 1 donation box out there.downriver. Plus a bunch of grocery stores. | ||

Although you missed some of the stores in Detroit PROPER, we are joining in on the cause, I just hope it's not to late to be effective. You can add Exotic Aquarium to the list. We have a donation bowl in place. Has anyone asked if they would be intersted in selling the shirts at local pet shops? Try even asking Critters on Ecorse road near Pellham. I would but I been sick lately,and I have no voice.Is there anyone one out there can even sell them at their employment? I remeber a few years ago in a small town,they sold shirts at a few locations to help save a old hotel. They sold enough to save it! This town had only 18,000 people. If they can do it so can we. I hope the fundraiser at the Yacht club sells well over 300 tickets. Is the aquarium open this weekend?downriver. | ||

We get a pretty decent daily foot traffic and I think they would do well. I will attend the FOBIA meeting next week (coming late, we close at 6:30pm) and maybe if it will help we can set-up something there. | ||

I don't know whether the April 3 closing is a done deal, alhough someone said they heard the Mayor say so in a radio interview the day after his state of the city speech. (he did not mention the Aq. in his soc speech). I think the odds are the Aq. will close after April 3, although the city council passed a resolution that the Aq. should stay open until July 1. However, the mayor can ignore this res. if he chooses. It is questionable whether there are five votes on the council to hardball the mayor on the Aq. by refusing to pass (or defeating) an appropriation he wants/needs unless he agrees to keep the Aq. open. The mayor has apparently concluded that the repercussions of closing the Aq. will not substantially harm his re-election chances. However, we apparently have no inside information as to whether the mayor and his advisors (whoever they are) consider this point debatable, or have firmly and finally concluded as much. Only time will tell whether that conclusion is correct. Regarding shirts, I think that they may be a good thing to continue to use if the Aq. does close after April 3. We would have to have a discussion about whether the better slogan on the shirts would still be Save the Belle Isle Aquarium or Re-open the Belle Isle Aquarium. You can save something that has been closed, unless it has been irrevocably destroyed. However, "re-opening" may get the goal accross better and point to the future better. Continuing to use "save" may make some people think that we are just selling off old shirts printed before the closing, or are only talking about the building, which people may equate in their minds with "the Belle Isle Aquarium" after it closes (if and when it does). I was asked if I had shirts when I went to Suzy's Bar in Hamtramck last Friday to make an announcement to the crowd about the AQ, and was invited to come back next week with shirts. I'll inquire whether I can leave some rather than do a traveling salseman thing. I think our most pressing need at this point would be some major media coverage of (1) recent attendance (post the first closing announcement) which indicates the potential for substantially increased attendance in the future with proper publicity and (2) the one major donor offer we do have re the roof. Media coverage of these two points could affect the question of whether closing the Aq. is a political liability for the mayor. As long as we (FOBIA) and the relatively few people we reach directly are the only people who know about the recent attendance upsurge and its significane and the roof offer, its not a big campaign liability. although it still could become one. | ||

On channel 2 this morning that is all they talked about. They had a reporter in front of the aquarium all morning. He mentioned todays rally,the Yacht Club fundraiser,and this Sundays closing. downriver. | ||

It had been a while since I had actually visited the Aquarium (embarrassed to say HOW LONG) so I spent my easter Sunday afternoon visiting the place (I usually work weekdays and weekends when it open & my ONLY off day is Monday when it is closed) I took almost 200 pictures of the place and placed some of my favorites out of the bunch here: http://homepage.mac.com/artpayne/PhotoAlbum8.html Looking back, some of my favorite fish that I seem to order and personally like are ones that are on display at the Belle Isle Aquarium. Some are VERY slow movers (retail wise) like Congo Tetras, Lamprologus Brachardi and Archerfish, but I think I like them because they impressed me in my younger days from visiting the Aquarium. I guess I was inspired after that visit on Sunday, and if the Aquarium doesn't close on April 3rd, I am ready to kick it up a Notch or TEN to raise some money (and awareness) for the place. I have been talking to Vance and have a few things in the works if it does remain open until the new July 1st deadline, I'll post them here as they come closer to being a reality.
