I love the aquarium & have been working very hard encouraging people to donate to the website, emailing, basically telling everyone I come into contact with to help in any way possible. However, I'm getting sick to death of hearing all the bashing going on in regards to the Arctic Ring of Life, the BINZ plans, etc. These are ALL things that the type of people who enjoy the aquarium also enjoy. It's immature to cut something or someone else down to try to build yourself up. It rarely works and is very transparent to anyone of intelligence. We need to work together to have ALL of these things for families to enjoy, aquarium included. All the ideas about privatization, memberships, etc are fantastic! Let's just please stop with all the "boycott the zoo" stuff, ok? It's only hurting our cause because, as I said, the zoo is something that people who like the aquarium also like and saying things against it make us look like extremists who aren't really going to get anything accomplished as far as the aquarium is concerned except a little bit of money and a lot of hot air. I don't think this is the image we want to project or the goal we wish to accomplish. Maybe "big money" investors would be more likely to take a look at our cause if we weren't so busy insulting other projects rather than focusing on our own goals. We need only to state the reasons why the aquarium is worth saving and stop calling everything else that's nice in this area worthless. My grandmother always told me that you'll catch more butterflies with honey than with vinegar. Smart woman.

I'm so happy someone else feels the same way I do! I was starting to get discouraged by our own negativity! Thanks, Jennifer! Let's save this baby!!!!!

Eye on the prize. Benefit Tuesday night at Charleys at Macomb Mall at 7-- let's continue raising money, we've got a roofing company offering their services, gratus --- let's bring in the money and let's work to stop this crazy idea of closing the oldest aqaurium in the country.

Spoken like a true American - assuming that resources are unlimited. The reason the BIA is closing is because money has and is being wasted on Kagan's favored projects. BUT we do need to focus on 1 thing - getting a corporated donor for BIA, which means supporting and selling BIA.

Is belle isle supposed to be managed by the city, or is it considered a county park?

Belle Isle is a city park, and much of it is managed by the Recreation Department. It gets complicated, though because while the Recreation Department manages the Conservatory, the Detroit Zoological Institute (another city department, which also manages the zoo in Royal Oak)), manages the Aquarium, the Historical Department manages the Dossin Great Lakes History Museum, and the Police and Coast Guard have facilities there also.

Needless to say, they don't all feel the same way about their facilities on the island and the city as a whole is sending out an extremely mixed message on this front - renovating and improving some facilities, while abandoning others, like the aquarium.

Once the Aquarium's future is secured, they all would benefit from cooperating and working on some shared goals and priorities - both in terms of public awareness and long term fundraising.
