I've always wanted to know. Is 'aquatic' a general term, or does it pertain exclusively to freshwater animals?

Aquatic can mean anything that dwells in water,

Often aquatic is used under the term Freshwater.
Marine is used more often to denote salt species.

Does that help Stephen?
