Help over-winter the Koi

Friends of BIA to help over-winter koi

Come watch Saturday, October 13 - 10 am

Winter is coming soon. It’s time for the koi and turtle in the lily pond between the Belle Isle Aquarium and Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory to be taken inside. So Saturday, October 13 the Friends of Belle Isle Aquarium, members of the Belle Isle Botanical Society and City of Detroit floriculture staff will join forces to winterize the koi and turtle. The move starts at 10:00 am and will last for several hours as the move must be done gradually for the safety of the fish. Come on down to Belle Isle and watch this exciting event in action.

Pictured are volunteers moving the fish earlier in the year. Last winter the Friends of BIA fed the fish and turtle weekly. They paid for the koi and turtle fish food and new equipment for the tanks.

Without the help of the Friends the animals’ quality of life would have been reduced. Questions on the care of the koi may be referred to Vance Patrick, President of the Friends of Belle Isle Aquarium at 586.663.9482.
